Hi, I’m Chris Chien the owner of Legendbrush Name Painting.

• I’ve been selling my paintings on Etsy since 2012.
• I first trained in name painting at Disneyland California.
• Since then, I’ve worked as a professional concept artist designing theme parks around the world—including projects for Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and more.

Today, I also teach as an art instructor on Outschool, where I rank in the top 1% of art teachers worldwide. I’ve taught 3,000+ students in 30+ countries, with more than 800 five-star reviews.

📚 About the Course

The course is made up of 4 modules and 16 lessons. Each video averages to around 15 minutes in length—short, clear, and to the point. Every lesson comes with graphics, music, and worksheets to guide your learning.

Module 1: Materials & Setup (4 lessons)

• Collect your supplies – Please plan to budget around $200–$250 for materials.
• Build your own brushes – You’ll learn how to construct customized name‑painting brushes using simple components.
• Set up your workspace – Give yourself about one month to organize and prepare a comfortable, well‑equipped area before diving into the lessons.

Module 2: Name Painting Fundamentals (5 lessons)

• Master the basic strokes – Learn the foundation brush movements that every name painting is built on.
• Paint your first characters – Step into name painting your first 2 characters: a mermaid and a princess.
• Complete your first project – Put it all together by painting the name ANNA start to finish. Plan for 1–2 hours per lesson with homework.

Module 3: Intermediate Techniques (4 lessons)

• Learn one new character each week – Build momentum with steady progress; by the end, you’ll know four iconic designs.
• Complete your second project – Put it all together by painting the name LUKE start to finish. Plan for 2–3 hours per lesson with homework.

Module 4: Advanced Techniques (3 lessons)

• Explore letter theory – Learn the 4 different letter categories that make up all the name painting letters so you can endless improve.
• Learn Calligraphy basics – Learn letterforms and typography to enhance your name painting abilities.
• Complete your third project – Put it all together by painting an advanced 6-letter name SOPHIE start to finish. Plan for 5–10 hours per lesson with homework.

❓ FAQ

🎨 What kind of paint and brushes do you use?
Great question! That’s fully covered in the course. I walk you through how to mix paints and even how to make your own brushes the traditional way. These aren’t store-bought—you’ll actually learn the same process I was taught when I first started.

💰 Can I make money as a name painter?
Honestly—yes, but it’s not easy. Some artists make side income at parties, through commissions, or at conventions. But name paintings are usually bought as special gifts—for birthdays, babies, or events. That makes it more of a fun side hustle or passion project than a reliable full-time job. The real value is picking up a rare creative skill you’ll enjoy for years.

😅 Yikes — do the materials really cost $200–$250?
They do. The list has a lot of paints and inks, and prices have gone up with inflation. I’ve already trimmed it down as much as I can, but realistically you should set aside around $200 if you want the full experience. Think of it as your one-time art kit—it’ll last well beyond the course.

🛒 Do I need to buy everything at once?
Not necessarily. You can start with the core items (paints, inks, and paper) and add extras like glitter or specialty paper later. But having everything from the beginning does make the process smoother and helps you get results faster.

🖌 Can I use my own paints instead?
I don’t recommend it. Name painting is surprisingly particular—the paints and inks on the list are the ones that actually work. Most store-bought paints aren’t compatible with name painting brushes. In fact, the “brush” isn’t really a brush at all—it’s more like a nib. There are no bristles; it’s closer to doing calligraphy.

The list is based on years of trial and error, so sticking to it will save you a lot of frustration. And just to be clear: I don’t make money from you buying these supplies—it’s purely about making sure you get the best results.

✍️ Why is there a calligraphy lesson?
Because clean, beautiful lettering is just as important as the characters! Many artists are skilled at drawing and coloring, but if their typography or letterforms are weak, their name painting is missing a core pillar.

Learning calligraphy will make your name paintings clearer and more legible. Plus, it gives you the ability to create smaller, faster “mini paintings” — perfect for gifts, conventions, or commissions.

🏆 Is this really “The Best Online Name Painting Course”?
Yes—and the title is both a playful wink and a true statement. Back in 2016, when I first launched this course, there weren’t any other active online name painting programs. So calling it “the best” was my tongue-in-cheek way of saying: it’s the best one out there… because it’s the only one.

But here’s the difference now: I’ve spent years refining, upgrading, and polishing this course with everything I’ve learned as a professional concept artist and teacher. This is the strongest version yet that I've made. Name painting is a rare art form, and if you want to learn it, I think this course is the most complete and inspiring place to start.
